Polyvinyl alcohol is a water-soluble polymer It is prepared by hydrolysis of a polyvinyl ester [polyvinyl acetate).

Application Areas: It is used as a starting material, for the preparation of other resins. It can be used as a component of elastomers used in the production of sponges.

These polymers are used as sizing agents on paper or textile, which confers resistance to oils and lubricating oils and also used for enhancing resistance of films against corrosion of solvents or oxygen. PVA can also be used as a component of adhesives and emulsifiers as suspending and thickening agents. In the pharmaceutical industty polyvinyl alcohol is used as viscosity enhancing agent and ophthalmic lubricants.
